Making of Julia

I thought it was time for a blog post again, after I was surprised to discover that my last blog post was 8 months ago. It's amazing how quickly time passes...
I know that many of you would like to know more about how my paintings are made, preferably watching instructional videos. But to produce tutorials and above all to supervise them, i.e. to be available for questions, is very time-consuming and I prefer to use my time for painting. That's why I limit myself to giving you a little insight into my way of working here in my blog from time to time.

This is Julia. I found the reference photo at New Masters Academy. From the very beginning I was not interested in the whole figure, but I was fascinated by the model's sunken in thought look into the distance. I wanted to capture that. I therefore cropped the photo and enlarged the detail, although at first I wasn't sure whether I wanted to include the hand in front of the breast. I then decided to leave out the hand, not only because painting and drawing hands is not my thing at all, but also because I wanted to concentrate on the face.

Perhaps a sentence about who or what the New Masters Academy is. New Masters Academy is a subscription-based website for art education on the Internet. Different artists teach different painting and drawing techniques, including sculpture. I recently purchased a year's subscription and now have access to all the learning content. As I have never had an education in arts - I am a pure autodidact - this is a completely new experience for me. I am now walking the path backwards to the "basics".  Who should be interested, here is the link: https://www.nma.art/about-us/

Aber wir wollten Malen...

But we were going to paint...

First of all I tinted the canvas with a thin ochre tone and then I made the sketch on top of it, taking care to define the prominent reference points as precisely as possible, i.e. the position of the eyes, nose, mouth and ears. It was important to note here that the viewer's perspective comes slightly from below and that the model's head is slightly tilted to the left. The sketch will be my road map, which I will use as a reference point next to the photo. With digital painting I have the advantage that I can work on several layers. This allows me, for example, to duplicate the layer with the sketch and place it at the top of the layer hierarchy. So I always have the possibility to fade in the sketch and control the painting underneath, even if the first sketch is already painted over. So I work with net and double bottom.

In the next stages I try to determine the distribution of the light/dark values in an underpainting, starting with only three tonal values, light (tonal value of the canvas), dark and half tone. By adding more halftones to the tonal values I can slowly shape the head and facial features before I start to apply more colour tones.

And so, more and more colour applications and corrections are added until the finished painting. Of course, I also use the possibilities of digital painting, such as the adjustment of tonal values, colour correction and so on, to enhance the effect of the painting.

    Hi Laura,
as I said it's subscribtion-based. You pay for monthly or yearly subsciption and for that time you have access to all the learning content.
