- How do I breathe life into a digital charcoal drawing?

I have always liked to draw with pencil and charcoal. This also continues in my digital work. However, I notice again and again that digitally painted pictures often seem flat and sterile - not only with pencil and charcoal. Paper structures help a little, but it is not the same as in real life.

I have found a way to pep up my digital charcoal drawings and would like to share this with you.

This is a portrait study I am currently working on. Not bad so far, but to me the picture seems a bit cumbersome so far, it lacks lightness and spontaneity.

In such situations I often use one of the many abstract scribbles I have accumulated over the years. Especially for charcoal drawings I have a set of pictures which you can download below. This is what the set looks like:

I use these pictures by placing them over the drawing with the Place command.

Over my portrait study I have placed two of these pictures:

I have set the Composite Method of the inserted images to overlay and set the opacity of both image layers to about 50%. In addition, I added a layer mask on both image layers and used black and grey tones to eliminate resp. reduce disturbing elements of the images.
I think that with this simple trick the drawing has gained tremendously in spontaneity and life, so that I am motivated to continue working on it. For I was almost about to throw the drawing into the trash...

Hier könnt ihr nun das Bilderset herunterladen:
