Watercolour Splashes

Nachdem kürzlich eine neue Version von Rebelle veröffentlicht wurde (Version 4), war ich doch sehr gespannt, wie das neue Feature Ölmalerei, für das in den Vorankündigungen überschwenglich Werbung gemacht wurde, aussieht. Kommt es an die Leistungen von Dicker Farbe in Corel Painter heran, oder übertrifft sie gar?

Ich muss sagen, dass mich die Leisungen des Features nicht vom Stuhl gerissen haben. Es erinnerte mich an die aus Painter bekannte Impastomalerei, mit der ich mich noch nie so richtig anfreunden konnte.  Vielleicht liegt es an mir, aber ich kann der neuen Ölmalerei in Rebelle nichts abgewinnen. Vielleicht müsste ich noch mehr ausprobieren.

Daneben scheint es, das es eine Reihe von Verbesserungen bei den trockenen Medien (Bleistift, Kohle, Pastell) gibt. Auch beim Aquarell gibt es eine ganze Reihe neuer Standardpinsel.

Da ich vom Aquarell in Rebelle schon immer begeistert war und ich mich viel zu wenig damit beschäftige, habe ich bei dieser Gelegenheit ein wenig Zeit investiert. Herausgekommen ist ein Aquarell-Portrait und mehrere Aquarellblätter mit einigen "Kleksen", die sehr gut geeignet sind, einem digitalen Aquarell die Steifheit zu nehmen und ein guter Anfang sind, ein Bild mit einigen Kleksen und Verläufen aufzulockern. After the recent release of a new version of Rebelle (version 4), I was very curious to see how the new oil painting feature, which was advertised effusively in the previews, would perform. Does it come close to, or even surpass, the performance of Thick Paint in Corel Painter?

I have to say that the performance of the feature didn't knock me off my chair. It reminded me of the impasto painting known from Painter, which I have never really been able to get to grips with.  Maybe it's just me, but I don't like the new oil painting in Rebelle. Maybe I should try out more

Besides that, it seems that there are a number of improvements in the dry media (pencil, charcoal, pastel). There is also a whole range of new standard brushes for watercolour.

As I have always been enthusiastic about watercolour in Rebelle, and as I do far too little with it, I took this opportunity to invest a little time. The result is a watercolour portrait and several watercolour sheets with some "blobs", which are very well suited to take the stiffness out of a digital watercolour and are a good start to loosen up a picture with some blobs and gradients. I am happy to make the sheets available for you to download in high resolution at the end of the post.

So sehen die Splash Sheets aus - That's what they look like:

Zuerst das Portrait von Violet: Nachfolgend könnt ihr sehen, dass ich mit Hilfe der Splash Sheets und der Technik in Rebelle und in Corel Painter einen hohen malerischen Effekt erziele, wobei der eigene malerische Aufwand relativ gering ist.

First the portrait of Violet: In the following you can see that I achieve a high painterly effect with the help of the splash sheets and the technique in Rebelle and in Corel Painter, whereby the own painterly effort is relatively low.

Am Anfang steht die Vorzeichnung - In the beginning stands the preliminary sketch

Über die Zeichnung habe ich das erste Splash Sheet gelegt (das rechte in der ersten Reihe oben. Ich habe dabei lediglich die Farbsättigung ein wenig reduziert.

I placed the first splash sheet over the drawing (the right one in the first row above). I have only reduced the colour saturation a little.

Ich habe dann mit einem weichen Radierer die hellen Stellen im Gesicht herausmodelliert.

I then used a soft eraser to model out the light areas on the face.

Jetzt war es an der Zeit, mit Hilfe der mittleren und dunkleren Töne die Gesichtszüge anzulegen. Meine Intention war bis hierher, ein monochromatisches Aquarell zu malen.

Now it was time to create the facial features with the help of the middle and darker tones. My intention up to this point was to paint a monochromatic watercolour.

Einfach um auszubrobieren, wie die Wirkung ist, habe ich ein weiteres Splash Sheet über das Bild gelegt (das Blatt oben 1. Reihe links). Ich habe ein wenig mit den Mischmodi gespielt und das Ergebnis, ein leicht warmer Ton und einige dezente Klekse mehr gefiel mir.

Just to try out what the effect is, I put another splash sheet over the image (the sheet above 1st row left). I played a little with the blend modes and liked the result, a slightly warm tone and some subtle blobs more.

Als nächstes habe ich die Gesichtszüge (Augen, Nase und Mund) verfeinert.

Next I refined the facial features (eyes, nose and mouth).

Den letzten Schliff habe ich dem Portrait dann in Corel Painter gegeben. Bis hierher habe ich ausschließlich in Rebelle gearbeitet. In Painter habe ich mit Hilfe von einigen Verläufen versucht, den warmen Ton um Mund Nase und Wangen zu verstärken.

I then put the finishing touches on the portrait in Corel Painter. Up to this point I have worked exclusively in Rebelle. In Painter I tried to enhance the warm tone around the mouth, nose and cheeks with the help of some gradients.

Einen kleinen Excurs noch um euch zu zeigen, wie ihr in Rebelle ein Splash Sheet über das Dokument legt.

A small excursus to show you how to put a splash sheet over the document in Rebelle.

Geht in der Menüleiste auf File-Import Image und holt euch im nachfolgenden Dialog das gewünschte Bild von der Festplatte.

In the menu bar, go to File-Import Image and in the following dialogue, fetch the desired image from the hard disk.

An den blauen Punkten könnt ihr das Bild in die gewünschte Position ziehen. Wenn ihr mit dem Mauszeiger in eine der Ecken geht, erscheint das Symbol, um das Bild zu drehen. Abschließend klickt ihr auf OK.

You can drag the picture into the desired position using the blue dots. If you move the mouse pointer to one of the corners, the symbol appears to rotate the picture. Finally, click on OK.

Dann erscheint das Splash Sheet auf einer gesonderten Ebene und ihr könnt dort mit den Mischmodi spielen oder auch mit den diversen Filtern, die Rebelle anbietet.

Then the splash sheet appears on a separate layer and you can play there with the blending modes and also with the various filters that Rebelle offers.

Die Splash Sheets sind JEPG-Dateien, das heißt, ihr könnt die Bilder in jeder anderen Anwendung benutzen, also auch in Painter.
